PhD Program

The Wharton Doctoral Program in Health Care Management and Economics is a program within the Wharton Doctoral Program in Management Science and Economics. The Health Care program seeks to develop outstanding scholars who are trained to apply advanced disciplinary knowledge to the management, economics and policy challenges related to health care management and policy. The program combines in-depth training in one major and one minor academic discipline, broad training in applied health services research, and advanced training in elective fields in business and other social sciences. The program offers students an exceptional opportunity to study with Wharton faculty as well as faculty in the University’s other schools, where scholars in many disciplines and professions collaborate to share the expertise that is essential for a full understanding and analysis of the health care sector’s particular problems and behavior. The program’s flexible structure allows students to pursue their own research interests while preparing for careers in academia, government, or private industry. Many graduates go on to teach in schools of business, medicine or public health, while others become researchers or policy analysts in the public and private sectors. Health Care students participate in the broader Wharton Doctoral Program, which offers opportunities for training in the full range of management disciplines. The program assures students a superb education and qualifications for whichever direction their interests and opportunities take them.
